Richard “Dick” Chapple 1939 – 2020

It is with the deepest regret that NACO have to announce that Richard (Dick) Chapple, NACO President, a dear friend and colleague sadly passed away on Monday 14 December 2020.

Richard became President in 2017 and since joining the Association in the late Seventies he fulfilled many roles in the Society; which included Representative to the Norfolk Cricket Alliance League, Alliance Appointments Officer and of course the role of President.

From being a very successful slow Left Arm bowler in local Norfolk cricket Dick as he was affectionally known as, went onto to be an extremely well-respected Umpire both on the Norfolk Alliance League and for a short period the East Anglian Premier League (in its formative seasons).

During his time as an Umpire which stretched over a period of nearly forty years Dick umpired in games ranging from Junior Cricket to Carter Cup Finals and will be remembered for his fairness, commitment and jolly disposition both on and off the field of play and of course for all his hard work as an administrator.

Also, during this period, he served for a short while as Secretary of the Norfolk Cricket Alliance, following which he became Assistant Secretary of the same organisation, a post he carried out with his usual passion and commitment.

Richard was also a huge fan of Norwich City Football Club and served his beloved “Canaries” as a Youth Team Organiser and for many years arranged the “ball boy” teams at the Carrow Road home games.

Amongst his other sporting attributes was his love for Lawn Bowls a sport he both played and followed with huge enthusiasm.

Away from the many sports he treasured Dick had a magnificent collection of model trains and tropical fish, both of which gave him many happy hours of enjoyment and pleasure.

The Norfolk and Norwich sporting community have lost a true and dedicated volunteer a fact endorsed 100% when reading all the beautiful tributes to him on social media and also listening to the special comments about Richard from people who have been in contact with NACO officials.

Richard was a wonderful and hugely respected man and will be sadly missed by all who knew him; our kindest thoughts and condolences are with his wife Janet and his family.

Rest in Peace Richard
